Route 9 begins in Fairview, NJ and ends on Randall's Island. This route reveals two shortcomings in the subway system. One, for commuters in New Jersey who do not have easy access to NJTransit to get to the PATH train, oftentimes a car or a bus is the percieved most effective way into the city. This is a scenario where the MTA (along with NJTransit and state government) could work to improve subway train connections between NJ and NYC, which could increas throughput for commuters and reduce traffic within the city. The other issue this route reveals is that Randall's Island does not have any subway lines that run through it. One possible line expansion that could serve Randalls Island is the W, which currently terminates at Ditmars Boulevard. By expanding service north, the MTA could connect one of very few islands in NYC that has no subway connection.
